The following was posted on an open forum by an annonymous poster. I think it is worthy of reposting here, and have done so, in part. Any feedback is welcome, of course.
Re: New Thread, familiar topic -- part-time volunteer judge, 17:19:16 10/01/04 Fri
Excellent idea to give this its own thread.
Again I ask, "What, exactly, makes a judge qualified? Please be specific."
Pageant moms: Judges do not look at a dress or outfit and think, "Oh that is SOOOO 5 minutes ago!! I'm gonna knock 3 points off for that dress!" We are not there to tear a kid to pieces. We have a set criteria, given to us by the director on what they are looking for, and we judge based upon that. Some things are objective, and others are subjective (based solely upon the opinion of any given judge).
Objective things we look for:
* Does the outfit FIT well?
* Are there gaps, threads, tears, stains, etc?
* Is the hemline too long? Too short? Uneven?
* Is it within the criteria given us by the director? Is it age appropriate? Too glitzy? Not glitzy enough?
* Is the contestant well-groomed?
* Does the contestant make good eye contact with the judges and audience?
* Etcetera
Subjective things we look for:
* Do we like the style of dress on that particular person? Does the color, cut and style fit their personality?
* Does the contestant show confidence? If so, how much?
* Does the contestant look like they are enjoying themselves? How natural/comfortable on stage do they appear? To what extent?
* Do we like the routine (pro-am/talent/etc)? Does it touch us on an emotional level?
* Do we find the grooming (hair and makeup) aesthetically pleasing?
* Etcetera
As a pageant parent, I pay the director to line up some people to give their opinion of what they see on any particular day. (Actually, I am paying the director for the cost of the ballroom, the cost of prizes, the cost of printing out all that paperwork and the mailings, the cost of the hotel rooms and food for her staff, the cost of the decorations, the cost of the stage and staging, the cost of the music and possibly the cost of the emcee, etc....but let's not split hairs). But it is just that...their OPINION.
So again, I ask, "What, **exactly,** makes a judge qualified?" :-)
